Overview

Approach to the Basics of Calculus, or “ABC” for short, was co-developed by Aalto University and University of Würzburg in 2009 in relationship to collaboration agreement between Finnish and Bavarian Virtual Universities. It was arranged two times as a joint Finnish-German course in 2010-2011, and after this as an online course by VHB in Germany for a number of years. Our team is now conducting an effort to update the course to take advantage of technologies conceived since the course’s debut; namely, Moodle, which many institutions have adopted for managing course resources, and STACK, allowing for automated assessment of exercise problems.

In this project, we will create an on-line course that will consist of two parts:

  • Introduction to engineering mathematics (2 cr). This is intended to work as a propedeutic course for university students but also as a first semester mathematics course for applied sciences (AMK) students.
  • Single variable calculus (5 cr). This is intended to cover the contents for the first semester university level course MS-A010x (i.e. differential and integral calculus and basics of ordinary differential equations).

Platforms and tools

  • STACK
  • GeoGebra
  • Moodle
