Digital accessibility is about making digital media usable by persons with disabilities and by older persons. It is an important thing to consider when designing websites, mobile apps, software and videos. Accessibility is also increasingly required by law, for public authorities, and for some private sectors, including banks, publishers and online shops.
This workshop will give you an introduction and some hands-on experience on the topic of digital accessibility. It is directed to students and staff with an interest in web design and development, software design and programming, quality assurance, and project management. We will look at types of disabilities and barriers encountered when interacting with digital media, and assistive technologies commonly used by people with disabilities. We will design rough versions of prototypes of web applications and mobile apps, and review them with regard to accessibility aspects.

Bio:
Gottfried Zimmermann is professor of mobile user interaction at the Stuttgart Media University, Germany. His research and teaching focuses on human-computer interaction, in particular on usability and accessibility aspects. He leads the Responsive Media Experience (REMEX) research group where he heads national and international research projects on digital accessibility, personalization and eLearning. He is an ACM Senior Member, and author of numerous publications and standards. In the years 2014-2016, he received the most research funding among all professors in Stuttgart Media University. As coordinator of the MOOC Accessibility Partnership (2014-2017), he led the first European MOOC on digital accessibility, thus building up a new capacity on digital accessibility expertise in Europe.
Zimmermann received a Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1999. In 2000, he joined the Trace Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, where he focused on research and development in the area of Universal Design in current and next-generation information and communication technologies. In 2003, he founded Access Technologies Group, a consulting company for ICT accessibility. From 2009-2011, he was junior professor of Media Informatics at the University of Tübingen, Germany. Since 2011, he is professor on mobile user interaction at the Stuttgart Media University.
