Teacher’s Coffee: A+ workshop for interactive online course material and smart content development

Aplus (or A+) is an open source learning management system used in the CS department on many basic programming courses, but also on advanced courses. In a number of short demonstrations, we present the design and implementation for this service oriented e-learning system, which supports interoperability and offers flexible APIs for external back ends to exchange information. For example, many courses utilize grading services for automatic assessment and feedback. The grading can be done synchronously or asynchronously using a submission queue. A farm of individual grading servers can be setup to handle large amount of submissions. In addition, we present tools to publish RST course content to be published in concert with A+ and the graders. RST (reStructuredText) is an easy-to-read, what-you-see-is-what-you-get plaintext markup syntax and parser system. It is useful for in-line program documentation (such as Python docstrings), but also for quickly creating web tutorials. We have extended the markup syntax and parser to support also interactive and smart content for teaching and learning purposes.
