Timeline

2017 – Jan 2018

Overview

The new online book on electrochemistry is a flexible learning environment, which includes various interactive material, such as simulations, video material, and end-of-chapter quizzes to facilitate learning. An online book will be easily accessed and distributed, and due to the versatile content, it will be suitable for students with different types of learning styles.

The goal of the pilot is to create an online textbook on electrochemistry, which serves as a course material on the master level course CHEM-E4145 Electrochemistry at Aalto University. The book is based on an existing electrochemistry textbook Sähkökemia, which is in Finnish. In this pilot, the electrochemistry textbook will be translated into English, revised and updated, and new interactive material will be included. The interactive material consists of curves, where parameters can be varied using sliders, video material, and interactive quizzes. Since the new online book will be in English, it can be used worldwide to teach electrochemistry at university level.

Platforms and tools

The online book utilizes MyCourses as a platform. The interactive curves are constructed using Mathematica. Also, video material created using Panopto will be included.

Pedagogical methods

The online book on electrochemistry is a flexible learning environment, which can easily be edited and revised according to the needs of the students. It includes various interactive material, such as simulations, video material, and end-of-chapter quizzes to facilitate learning. As the online book features material in many formats, students with different types of learning styles can benefit from the book. Also, the online book allows for continuous access to course material, and enhances student-to-student and faculty-to-student communication because discussion forums can be linked to the book.
