Overview
Online education has moved from our ‘future’ to our ‘present’ basically overnight. The current COVID-19 pandemic has restricted all onsite educational activities, pushing the online learning in the center of Aalto’s teaching model. While there is an abundance of online learning tools, what is missing is:
- systematic overview of existing online tools (platforms/software/mobile application) and their suitability for design collaboration and workshopping in design education;
- understanding which tool is suitable for which type of assignment, interaction style, stage in design process, etc.;
- insights on which kinds of pedagogical discussions can be initiated with different tools;
- informed opinions on the appropriateness of different tools for educational purposes and how they support students in preparing for work life.
Platforms and tools
A wide variety of online tools (e.g., Miro, Lucidchart, Trello, Figma, Jira, InVision, Zoom etc.)
Pedagogical methods
Pedagogical matching of online tools for systems thinking / service design
Based on the proposed typology, this activity will match different tools with the type of assignment, interaction style, stage in design process, course objectives and assignments, and potential pedagogical discussions. This pilot project will be monitored by the educational board of both School of Arts, Design and Architecture and School of Business.
