Overview
The goal of the pilot is to design a well-operating large-scale course that is motivating for the students and manageable for the teachers.
The pilot course is organised around three consecutive levels that operate as a spiral: a factual level, an application level, and a reflection level, each of which ends in a final quest. The factual level includes online learning materials and a digital, automatically graded test. The application level includes online peer review and video production by student groups. The reflection level contains an essay which is partly based on students’ answers to digital entry and exit questionnaires. The course is about blended learning but it is in practice possible for a student to also use it as an online-only course. Gamified elements are introduced in the form of passing levels, collecting rewards, choice of activities and targets, rapid feedback, real-time status information, additive grading, gradual release of content, and so on.
Platforms and tools
The pilot uses MyCourses as the overall learning platform and Panopto for the video assignments. Using these standard Aalto tools carries the advantages that they are supported by Aalto and that students are already familiar with them.
Additionally, a collection of learning materials is compiled from external online content (text and videos) which is then complemented with own materials in the event of gaps.
